Provincial Housing programs for seniors
Housing Nova Scotia offers several programs to help seniors with lower incomes maintain and modify their homes to ensure they are safe and affordable.

Financial assistance and grant programs for homeowners
Housing Nova Scotia offer grants and forgivable loans to low income households to allow for emergency repairs as well as repairs related to health and safety.

Property Maintenance 

Snow Removal
YMCA Senior Snow Removal works in partnership with the City of Halifax to offer snow removal to seniors, and persons with disabilities. The program is dependent on eligibility criteria. Call (902) 483-3678 for more information.

HomeWarming Program
This initiative offers no-charge energy assessments and free home upgrades to eligible Nova Scotians.

Better Business Bureau (BBB)
The BBB produce a comprehensive directory of accredited businesses that offer a variety of services to the consumer.

Independent Living

Independent Living Nova Scotia supports persons with disabilities in making informed choices about how they live their lives. This is achieved by offering programs & services which promotes independent living. The organization offers a peer support group & workshops. 

Philips Lifeline is a Medical Alert service in the home and on the go. Call 1-866-387-1548 for more information.

Home Care

Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) offer home care, personal support & community services for people of all ages.

Meal/Grocery Delivery

Halifax Meals on Wheels delivers fresh, chilled meals Monday – Friday

Heart to Home Meals  free meal deliveries direct to your door.

Mobile Food Market brings fresh, high quality, affordable foods to neighbourhoods in Halifax with food access issues.

Square Roots Fairview/Clayton Park is a volunteer based initiative aiming to reduce food waste by redirecting surplus produce to community members at an affordable rate.

Transportation

Access-A-Bus is a shared ride, door-to-door, transit service for persons who are unable to use the conventional transit system due to physical or cognitive disabilities. Other Services

ElderDog Canada provide assistance free-of-charge to seniors who may be finding it difficult to care for their dog.  Volunteers provide: (1) in-home support such as dog-walking, dog feeding, minor grooming, providing transportation to vet or grooming appointments, etc., (2) securing temporary or forever homes for dogs when a senior falls ill, is hospitalized, or moves.  To find a chapter (Pawd) near you visit: http://www.elderdog.ca/Pawds/FindaPawdClosetoYou.aspx.  To request assistance, call 1-855-336-4226 or email [email protected]
